Questions
1. (a) The colored bands appear at different positions because of how quick or slow they go through the stationary and mobile phase. As the water rises, the initial color rises with it, making different colored bands as it keeps spreading upwards.
(b) I would say pink was the most attracted to the solvent because the majority of the color streak is pink, the whole middle section. Every ther color mostly branched from that pink color, and the pink showed up very bright and vivid.
2. Th dyes that came about in water and alcohol differ because the alcohol color is more vibrant and distinct, while the water seemed to make blobs of color with no definition to them.
3. Paper chromatography is used all the time, quite ofter in forensics when solving crimes. Chromatography can tell investigators about different materials at crime scenes, and can ofter aide in catching someone that committed a crime.
4. First, filtration is a technique to separate things, through physical changes, they filter through substances to remove unwanted substances that are mixed in. For example, to get clean water, we must filtrate all of the bacteria and bugs out of it before we drink it. Another technique is centrifugation, which separates molecules that are already too small to be filtered normally. They separate by difference in density, leaving the less dense substance on top. This is used in blood and urine tests to detect things such as disease and drugs.
5. All of the solvents that showed color mostly showed pink, with blue at the top, and a more yellow/orange below. It looks like a sunset.
6. Some factors that I think would affect separation patterns of different pens are color, wet/dry erase, permanent, scented, washable, toxicity, etc.
